MP reports Polish law enforcement want to reinstate visa regime with Ukraine

(MENAFN) Polish law enforcement and security agencies are reportedly in favor of reintroducing visa requirements for citizens of certain countries, including Ukraine, according to opposition MP Krzysztof Bosak.

Bosak, deputy speaker of Poland’s lower house of parliament and a leader of the nationalist Confederation party, stated on social media that officials from police and public services had informally expressed a desire to reinstate visas. He criticized the ruling coalition for allegedly ignoring these concerns and failing to allocate adequate resources to manage mass immigration, particularly from former Soviet states.

Poland was a major refuge for over a million Ukrainians following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict in 2022. However, public opinion and political support for Ukrainian refugees have declined significantly. Bosak’s comments follow the arrest of a 36-year-old Ukrainian man, Ihor H., in Sopot, who is accused of trying to sabotage electrical equipment at a local water facility.

The Confederation party has long opposed the government's liberal immigration stance and has called for tighter border regulations. Bosak has warned that ongoing mismanagement could threaten the Schengen zone.

Tensions in Poland have been growing amid perceptions that Ukrainian immigrants are placing strain on public resources or posing security risks. Government statistics show that roughly 2.5 million Ukrainians now live in Poland, making up nearly 7% of the population.

Public sentiment has shifted noticeably: a March 2025 poll by the CBOS Center revealed that only 50% of Poles still support accepting Ukrainian refugees, a sharp drop from 81% in 2023. Although about one million Ukrainians are officially registered, Poland has committed approximately 4.2% of its GDP to supporting them.
